Logistics is indispensable to our daily lives. And an indispensable part of the logistics industry is a commercial warehouse. Did you know that you need to register your warehouse to operate a warehousing business?
Article 3 of the “Warehousing Business Law” set forth by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism states the following Article 3 Any person who intends to operate a warehousing business shall obtain a registration conducted by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.”
There are several standards established by law regarding commercial warehouses, and only by complying with these regulations can a warehousing business be registered. Many people may be aware of this registration, but may not understand exactly what it entails.
In this article, we will organize the registration of commercial warehouses in an easy-to-understand manner and explain the particular points and cautions that you need to know so that you can resolve any questions you may have about logistics and warehousing-related issues. Please also refer to the “Tent Warehouse” as an advantageous solution in sales warehousing and registration.

What is a Tent Warehouse?
Tent warehouses are, as the name implies, tent-like warehouses constructed with a “membrane structure” consisting of a metal framework covered with a membrane material (fabric).
I was wondering, “If it’s called a tent, doesn’t that mean it’s not temporary? Are there any problems with strength, etc.?”
You may be concerned that this is not the case. Rather, it offers many advantages over traditional warehouses.
The following features and characteristics are reasons why we recommend this tent warehouse.
- Excellent in terms of functionality
- Low cost and short construction period
- Relaxation measures for building permits are available.
I will explain one by one.
Excellent in terms of functionality
Tent warehouses are extremely functional due to the properties of the membrane material and other factors. Specifically, the following features make it suitable for a variety of warehousing applications.
- High lighting performance brightens the warehouse and saves electricity for lighting.
- Less heat retention than metal roofs, etc.
- No rust on walls and roofs (membrane materials)
- Easy maintenance
- Available in a variety of sizes for various applications
- Flexible and earthquake resistant, minimizing damage in the event of a fall
- The “Dual Membrane System” can also function as a temperature-controlled warehouse.
- Some specifications are designed to withstand cold-weather snowfall.
- Nonflammable membrane material can be used for fire and disaster prevention
Relaxation measures for building permits are available.
In some cases, building permit exemptions are available for the construction of fixed or telescopic (bellows) tent warehouses, provided that the conditions stipulated in “Notification No. 667 of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism” are met. The four main conditions are as follows
- The building must be a membrane structure with a total floor area of 1000 m2 or less.
- It must have a roof (gable, single-flow, or circular arc) and walls, and only one story.
- The height of the eaves from the ground to the eaves must be less than 5 m.
- Membrane materials shall be anchored to the steel framing at intervals of not more than 3.0 m in the direction of the dead end.
If this 667 applies, the following mitigation measures are available
- Design wind speed reduction provisions are available. (0.8 times the base wind speed or 28m/second, whichever is greater)
- A conformity determination (peer check) regarding the validity of the structural calculations is no longer required.
With such mitigation measures, even warehouses above a certain size can be installed with less burden, further reducing costs and construction time. To determine whether a tent warehouse qualifies for the mitigation measures, there are strictly other detailed checks in addition to the above four points. Since specialized research is required for these checks, it is generally advisable to request a business operator with a proven track record and knowledge of the subject.
