Careful explanation of the overall process of constructing a tent warehouse
2019.10.02
If you are considering the introduction of a tent warehouse, you will probably arrive at the key phrase “short construction period” in the process of gathering information.
In this article, we will briefly explain the actual time frame and the overall process for the construction of a tent warehouse. We will also answer the frequently asked question, “Do I need to apply for confirmation?
We invite you to consider your business plan based on the information below.
Membrane structures, such as tent warehouses, are the same as common structures
The premise is that membrane structures such as tent warehouses still have a strong image of being “temporary. Therefore, the reality is that there are still many questions as to whether tent warehouses need to apply for confirmation as buildings.
Confirmation of application contents (construction)
Tent warehouses are defined by law as buildings.
The current standard is stipulated in Notification No. 666 of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, which was issued and enforced in 2002. Membrane structures are buildings that conform to the ” technical standards necessary for safety regarding structural methods. Tent warehouses are treated in the same way as ordinary buildings under the Building Standard Law. Therefore, an application for building permit is also required. The same treatment as general construction means that tent warehouses are required to have “structures that can handle wind speeds and snow loads” as specified by local regulations.

However, membrane structures that conform to the regulations for tent warehouse applications (Building Standard Law Notification No. 667) can be designed and constructed in a more cost-effective manner because they are subject to design wind speed reduction regulations.
One of the major advantages of tent warehouses is not only the short construction period, but also the low cost of construction.
Tent Warehouse Construction Flow
Let us review the specific construction process for a tent warehouse with a short construction period. Please note, however, that this is only an example, and the actual process will vary depending on the company in charge of the construction.
prior arrangement
Meet with the contractor to discuss your issues and needs, and receive the best proposal from among the many variations of tent warehouses available.
On-site and legal confirmation *Subsurvey of ground level, etc.
To confirm the feasibility of the proposal, the construction manufacturer will visit the site and conduct various surveys, etc.
- Whether the ground is suitable for building a warehouse
- Can you secure a route to bring in heavy equipment?
- Are there any legal problems with the surrounding environment?
The scope of the survey is wide-ranging, including
Estimate, confirmation of specifications, and construction contract
Based on the surveyed information, a formal quotation and specifications are prepared, and the contents are confirmed. If the contents are agreed upon, the contract is sealed and the order is placed. (Tent warehouses are characterized by a short period of time between order placement and delivery.
Preparation of drawings and structural calculations, confirmation application procedures
Detailed architectural drawings and structural calculations are prepared, and an application for building permit is submitted to the local government with all necessary documents. The client must prepare a registered site plan. It will be very easy if an experienced construction manufacturer follows up or acts on behalf of the client.
Tent warehouse fabrication and foundation work begins.
After the application is approved, the foundation is constructed. Depending on the condition of the ground, ground improvement may be required here. During this time, materials such as tent fabric and steel frames are manufactured. One of the factors that shortens the construction period for tent warehouses is that the materials are manufactured at the factory in advance and delivered to the site according to the order.
Tent warehouse construction
The warehouse is constructed by assembling the delivered components on site. The construction process for the main body of the warehouse takes approximately 10 days, as shown in the schedule below. This is by far the shortest construction period compared to general construction.

Construction completion survey and handover
The client is also present for a final check to ensure that there are no problems with the constructed warehouse and that there are no differences from the application documents. If there are no problems, the warehouse is handed over to the client.
Although the time frame may vary depending on the procurement span of parts and materials, it generally takes four months from the time an order is placed to the final delivery of the building. (*In some cases, such as the Olympics, when there is a rush for construction, it takes time to arrange for steel frames, etc.).
Advantages of installing a tent warehouse
Short construction time is not the only advantage of tent warehouses.
If you are considering building, rebuilding, or renovating a warehouse, you should also be aware of the following points.
Construction costs can be reduced
The rational structure, lightweight material composition, systematized design and high construction technology by specialized units can reduce the cost of construction by reducing the volume of foundation work. It is also possible to reduce construction costs by approximately 40% compared to general construction.

Can be used for heat protection.
In summer, temperatures in warehouses can reach 40°C or higher, making countermeasures essential. With a tent warehouse, the characteristics of the materials used can keep the temperature inside the warehouse from rising, even in summer.

What is “heat control” and specific improvement measures for logistics warehouses and factories?
Humidity control.
Due to the nature of the structure and materials, moisture tends to accumulate in warehouses. By installing ceiling fans, you can enjoy the many benefits of tent warehouses while also protecting against moisture.

Warehouse running costs can also be reduced.
Membrane materials are thin and, especially when used on roofs, allow a great deal of natural light to enter the building. Although light harvesting is not commonly required for warehouse roofs, it is actually a feature that can be very effective.
A bright environment increases the visibility of workers in the warehouse. It is also said that brightness can also improve people’s moods and increase productivity. It also improves work efficiency, and if the structure is designed to let in more natural light, it will directly lead to a reduction in electricity costs for lighting.
The tent roof is bright and does not trap heat.
earthquake-resistant
Membrane materials are more flexible than metal or slate and can absorb earthquake shaking. Its light weight also reduces the extent of damage in the event of a fall.
In addition, the tent warehouse itself is by far the most resistant to earthquakes because of its lighter structural system than conventional construction. In fact, during the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and the Great East Japan Earthquake, there were no recorded cases of collapsed damage, although there was some foundation lifting.
Order a tent warehouse from a proven one-stop shop.
To maximize the benefits of tent warehouse construction, you should still choose a construction company that offers a one-stop shop for the entire process.
The more companies involved, the more intermediary margins there are, the greater the cost, the more unclear responsibility becomes, and the more time is required for handover. In addition, it is always a good idea to check manufacturers’ case studies, as a company with an extensive track record can be trusted that much more.
Taiyo Kogyo Corporation boasts an overwhelming track record in the industry for the construction of membrane structures, and since its establishment in 1922, the company has boasted an unparalleled wealth of experience in the construction of membrane structures, including the Tokyo Dome and Kansai International Airport. The company also handles a large number of tent warehouses, and can be expected to have the ability to respond to a wide variety of issues and needs.
We look forward to hearing from you.
