Tent Warehouse Resistant to Typhoon Damage! Examples of Typhoon Damage to Warehouses and Countermeasures
2019.09.03
Japan is a country prone to natural disasters. Typhoons, which always come every year, are one of the most noticeable disasters. Many warehouse owners are worried about the typhoon season from summer to autumn.
Also, for businesses that are thinking about building a warehouse in the future,
- As unbreakable as possible against natural disasters
- Damage, if any, that can be minimized.
- Easy maintenance after the fact

Tent warehouses can be a powerful solution to such problems.
A decade ago, many people had an image of tent warehouses as fragile, but today, with advances in technology and products that utilize steel plates for exterior walls, durability has improved dramatically.

Damage to warehouse caused by typhoon
Damage to warehouses caused by typhoons always occurs somewhere in Japan every year. Unfortunately, as Japan is a “disaster-prone country,” typhoon damage is an unavoidable risk, as shown in the examples below.
.
It is probably still fresh in your mind that Typhoon No. 21 swept through the Kinki and Hokuriku regions in 2018, causing extensive damage. Many warehouses in the affected areas were damaged. In one tragic accident, the president of a company was killed when he was pinned under a collapsed warehouse.
<Secondary damage
A secondary disaster occurred when the roof of a gymnasium at a municipal elementary school, blown off by the typhoon, knocked down surrounding utility poles, which in turn hit the roof of a private house. Mortar fragments from the exterior walls that flew off also damaged the exterior walls of cars and private homes, and the city and residents had a dispute over compensation for each.
Thus, damage to a warehouse caused by a typhoon is not limited to the warehouse itself, but also carries the risk of causing damage to other buildings. This can sometimes lead to compensation issues, making advance risk management important.

Why is it easier to mitigate typhoon damage in a tent warehouse?
A “tent warehouse” is a warehouse with a “membrane structure” that literally resembles a tent, with a metal framework covered with a membrane fabric. As a result, the risk of human casualties due to collapse and secondary disasters caused by damaged roofs and scattered materials, as discussed in the previous section, is small. This is a remarkable difference compared to normal warehouses.
On the other hand, some people may be concerned about the robustness of tent warehouses. Of course, tented warehouses are not as durable as sturdy warehouses with steel roofs. However, recent technological developments have dramatically improved the durability of tented warehouses, and it is rare for them to be damaged by ordinary typhoons.
In the event of damage, tent warehouses are relatively easy to repair. In addition, if a company such as ours provides materials procurement, processing, and construction in-house, it is possible to respond in a “short construction period”. Recovery from typhoon damage will also be smooth.
In addition, tent warehouses are highly mobile and can be easily relocated to a less typhoon-prone location. They are also low-cost in terms of capital, and even if they are severely damaged by a super typhoon, the durability and depreciation period of the building makes the risk acceptable to a large extent.

Regular maintenance is important
Just as important as preparing for disaster is the regular maintenance of your tent warehouse. The membrane materials we offer are mainly two systems with polyester and glass cloth as the base fabric. This is coated with polyvinyl chloride (PVC). In addition, titanium dioxide is used to provide an antifouling treatment that has a powerful “organic matter decomposition function” and “hydrophilic function” that decomposes and removes contaminants from the surface of the membrane material itself.
In other words, it is possible to clean the tent membrane by natural means.
Taiyo Kogyo’s is a basic technology for oxidative decomposition-type photocatalysts (developed by the University of Tokyo Faculty of Engineering and Nippon Soda Co,)
and photocatalyst licensing technology (developed by TOTO KIKI Co., Ltd.), and jointly developed by the Company and Nippon Soda Co.
However, the resin that coats the membrane inevitably deteriorates due to the effects of ultraviolet rays. If left unchecked, this can lead to membrane rupture, through which outside air and rain can penetrate into the storage area. Frequent maintenance increases the durability of the building. Replacement should also be done as needed.
We offer a ” Membrane Material Deterioration Diagnosis, Repair and Repair Service ” to address the aging and deterioration of these tent warehouses. Based on the results of the inspection and diagnosis, we will propose a maintenance plan.
summary
Typhoons come every year, and they can cause serious damage to warehouses. Tent warehouses are one of the best solutions to minimize the damage at a low cost.
Frequent maintenance also increases the durability of the building and reduces the total cost of ownership over the long term. Easy to maintain, tent warehouses are also great because they do not need to be rebuilt if the membrane is replaced.
