Issues and Causes in Japanese Logistics

According to the Cabinet Office, the “working-age population” between the ages of 15 and 64 peaked in the mid-1990s and has been declining since then, falling from approximately 74 million as of 2020 to approximately 45 million by 2065, a decrease of approximately 29 million.

Furthermore, the following graph prepared by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism shows that the job-to-job ratio for truck drivers (including part-time truck drivers) is extremely high compared to all occupations. This means that truck drivers are almost twice as scarce as other occupations.
Meanwhile, logistics needs continue to expand
While labor is in short supply, logistics needs continue to expand. According to a survey by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the number of parcels handled in 2020 will be approximately 4.8 billion, which represents a sharp increase of 111.9% over the previous year.
The logistics industry has entered a phase in which it must urgently implement significant improvements in operational efficiency in order to respond to both labor shortages and expanding needs.
Why is there an extreme shortage of truck driver positions? It is said that the main reason is the heavy workload.
Truck Driver Shortage Caused by "Cargo Handling Operations
According to data released by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in 2015, truck drivers spend an average of 13.5 hours per operation (if they have a truck on hand), of which about 33%, or 4.5 hours, are spent “on hand” and “cargo handling.
The inefficient and harsh working environment is particularly deterring younger workers, and the labor shortage in the logistics industry is accelerating.
What is cargo handling?
The main cause of logistics inefficiencies and heavy labor is “cargo handling operations. Cargo handling operations refer to the entire process of handling cargo in the logistics process. How to save labor in cargo handling - "Slit Container," a material handling system for efficient cargo handling
