Membrane Roof to be Used on Adelaide International’s Centre Court to Create All-Weather Facility

~ Major redevelopment will make it possible to host International Tennis Federation (ITA) and Women's Tennis Association (WTA) matches.

Taiyo Kogyo’s Australian subsidiary (MakMax Australia ) has participated in the major redevelopment of the Memorial Drive Tennis Complex in Adelaide, Australia, by completing a new membrane roof over the existing center court and spectator seating.

The Adelaide International, played at the Memorial Drive Tennis Complex, is a high-profile prelude to the Australian Open, the opening event of the four major tennis tournaments (Grand Slams). The major renovation will result in a world-class all-weather court capable of hosting International Tennis Federation (ITA) and Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) matches.

The construction had to be completed in just seven months to complete the major renovation in time for the tournament in January 2020. MakMax Australia was MakMax Australia designed, fabricated, and installed a PTFE-coated fiberglass membrane roof over the center court. The steel roof frame was erected separately from the existing bleachers, and 6,350 square meters of membrane material was installed to cover the existing tennis court, north bleachers, and south bleachers. State-of-the-art LED lighting provided a lighting environment suitable for the high-resolution television images used for the tennis broadcasts. In order to meet the short construction schedule, we worked with the contractors involved in the project to plan and manage the project meticulously. By utilizing a parametric design structural model obtained from a subcontractor, we were able to minimize the lead time for steel fabrication drawings, and both parties were able to confirm steel frame connections and other details.
