Taiyo Kogyo Column

Completed large ETFE film canopy on pedestrian deck

Shanghai Taiyo Kogyo has completed an ETFE film canopy over the pedestrian deck of Kingboard Square in Shanghai, China. The ETFE film canopy is located on the pedestrian deck connecting the specialty stores and office building. The pedestrian deck and the canopy above it resemble the shape of the Chinese character for “person,” symbolizing the facility’s importance to the Kingboard Group, the owner of the building, as a human connection. The canopy consists of 300 ETFE film air cushions, each with its own unique triangular or diamond shape. The canopies were designed and cut based on these measurements. The canopy covers a total area of approximately 6,000 square meters. The ETFE film provides outdoor-like light under the canopy while protecting pedestrians from rain and other external elements. Shanghai Sun Industries worked with design firm Wong & Ouyang (HK) Ltd. and prime contractor Tang, Chenhua to make this project a reality. The canopy was completed in October 2017 and received high praise from the client in terms of quality, construction management, and after-sales service. The project won the “Grand Prize” in the category of pneumatic structure in a competition organized by the International Association of Industrial Fabrics (IFAI).
