Full-scale sales of fall prevention fence that achieves “1% dimness” with ECTFE membrane material.

(Tokyo Head Office: Setagaya-ku, Tokyo; Osaka Head Office: Yodogawa-ku, Osaka; President: Yumi Nomura), a manufacturer of large membrane structures (tent structures) and civil engineering and logistics materials, will launch a fall prevention fence to be installed on the side of roads using a transparent membrane material made of ECTFE (ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene copolymer), The product will go on sale in January 2024. This product will be installed at highway curves to prevent riders from falling and jumping off the road. It is a fall prevention fence with a membrane structure that uses ECTFE membrane material with a “degree of dimness of 1%”*, which provides high impact resistance and excellent landscaping.
* Haze 1%: The degree of haze, also known as haze. It is the ratio of the diffuse light component, excluding the parallel light component, to the total light rays transmitted. Haze is measured as the ratio of light scattered more than 2.5 degrees through a plastic sample to the incident light.

In 2018, we began joint development of a rider fall prevention structure using membrane material with Metropolitan Expressway Company Limited (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo). We have been researching a high-impact resistant and highly permeable membrane material to prevent riders from falling, and have installed and verified transparent fall prevention fences using ECTFE membrane material at the Hamasaki Bridge Junction and the Edobashi Junction in 2020. Now that we have determined that it is feasible to commercialize a fall prevention fence using this ECTFE membrane material, we will begin full-scale sales expansion.
ECTFE is a special membrane material with high transparency, and this is the first time we have used it on a permanent structure on a full-scale basis.

Compared to the commonly used ETFE membrane material, it has high transparency and excellent scenic qualities. It also has low transparency distortion, so it does not cause any discomfort to the driver’s field of vision.

ECTFE is an impact-resistant material that can withstand an impact of 130 kg and is unbreakable even when subjected to flying rocks. It is also highly flame-resistant, making it a new material that is more suitable for fall prevention fences than steel mesh or glass materials.
