Expanded sales of “Concrete Canvas” for use against wild boars and other animal damage

Prevent excavation around the ground edge of protective fences and underground burial sites

July 12, 2023

(Tokyo Head Office: Setagaya-ku, Tokyo; Osaka Head Office: Yodogawa-ku, Osaka; President: Yumi Nomura), a company that manufactures large membrane surface structures (tent structures), civil engineering and logistics materials, and other products, has been testing the effectiveness of Concrete Canvas (CC), a special cement-filled fabric that produces a highly durable concrete mat by simply applying water. The company has been testing the effectiveness of Concrete Canvas (CC), a special cement-enclosed fabric that can be used to make highly durable concrete mats simply by applying water. Now that the company has verified that CC is effective in protecting farmland from being dug up by wild boars and other animals, it will begin full-scale sales of this product in July to managers of farmland, parks, roads, and underground cables as a product to prevent damage by animals.

Wild boar sneaking under a protective fence

The amount of damage to agriculture, forestry, and fisheries caused by wild birds and beasts in FY2021 was 15.5 billion yen (“Damage to Agricultural Crops Caused by Wild Birds and Beasts in Japan,” Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries). Although there has been a declining trend over the years, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries states that “damage caused by wild birds and beasts has had a more serious impact on farming, forestry, and fishing villages than the figures show, as it has resulted in decreased willingness to engage in farming, increased abandonment and separation from farming, soil loss due to loss of forest understory vegetation, and feeding damage to rare plants” (“Current Situation and Measures for Damage Caused by Wild Birds and Beasts The current situation and countermeasures for damage caused by wild boars and other animals” (Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, April 2023). However, there have been many cases where wild boars have burrowed under the fences and eaten away crops even when the fences are in place, or where wild boars have dug up the ground around important underground structures such as fiber-optic cables.

CC is laid around the ground edge of fences and underground burial sites

Although protective fences are effective in preventing wild boars from entering the area, it is necessary to cover the ground with a highly durable material to prevent digging around the edges of fences and underground burial sites. This time, we confirmed in a demonstration experiment that covering the ground with a special cement-filled fabric CC, which produces a highly durable concrete mat simply by applying water, is effective in preventing this boar infestation. Based on the results of this experiment, we have decided to market the CC as a product to prevent damage from wild boars.

(1) The CC end was buried by digging a trench and fixing it with anchor pins to prevent it from being lifted by the nose.
The results of the experiment confirmed that CC (7 mm thick) is effective in protecting against excavation by wild boars under protective fences/fences and against excavation of important buried objects.

Concrete Canvas Overview

CC is a composite material called “Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mats (GCCM)” developed in the UK. The structure consists of specially formulated dry concrete encased in a three-dimensional woven fabric (surface: woven polyester fabric, backside: PVC film). After laying, the dry concrete hardens by sprinkling water or immersing it in water, creating a thin, highly durable, and fire-resistant concrete layer. The product has been registered with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s NETIS (New Technology Information System) (CG-220009-A ) and has been widely used in slope protection, grass and bamboo control, waterway construction, waterway repair, and other applications.
