TAIYO EUROPE GmbH (Germany), a European subsidiary of Taiyo Kogyo Corporation (Tokyo headquarters: Setagaya-ku, Tokyo; Osaka headquarters: Yodogawa-ku, Osaka; President: Yumi Nomura), which is involved in the design and construction of large membrane structures (tent structures) and civil engineering and logistics materials, was awarded the Gold Award in the architecture category of the “iF Design Award 2023,” one of the most prestigious design awards worldwide. The Frankfurt Pavilion, for which TAIYO EUROPE GmbH, a European subsidiary of Taiyo Yudo-Ku, Osaka, Japan, was involved in the design and construction of membrane materials, received the Gold Award, the highest award in the architecture category of the iF Design Award 2023, one of the most prestigious design awards in the world. The Frankfurt Pavilion is a temporary structure that served as the main venue for the Frankfurt Book Fair (FRANKFURTER BUCHMESSE 2022, October 19-23, 2022), the world’s largest book fair.
The “Frankfurt Pavilion” is a freestanding wooden structure with a total area of 480 m2 and a height of 6.5 m, covered with 960 m2 of white translucent membrane material. It is a beautiful temporary structure that looks like three overlapping shells when viewed from the outside. The Frankfurt Book Fair will host a number of events attended by authors, book industry professionals, and readers from around the world. The Frankfurt Pavilion served as the main stage for a variety of events, including readings, award ceremonies, press conferences, and musical and culinary events. Although the building was only used for a limited period of time, it was a valuable space that transformed the encounter between authors and readers into a wonderful experience, and the beautiful form of the membrane material was well received.
The pavilion was first built in 2018 and then used three times, in 2019 and 2022. The iF Design Award 2023 was awarded to this temporary building for its environmentally friendly reuse functionality and aesthetics. In cooperation with a local architectural and design firm (Holzbau Amann GmbH), MHI was contracted to design and construct the membrane materials, as well as dismantle and clean the membrane materials. In 2022, the Nissan Pavilion, which we were also involved in the construction of, received the iF design award, making this the second consecutive year that we have received this award. The Nissan Pavilion is a facility that opened in Minato Mirai in 2020 for a limited time as an interactive experience of the future mobility society.
