Taiyo Kogyo Corporation
(Tokyo headquarters: Setagaya-ku, Tokyo; Osaka headquarters: Yodogawa-ku, Osaka; President: Yumi Nomura; hereafter “Taiyo Kogyo”), a manufacturer of large membrane structures (tent structures), civil engineering and logistics materials, has introduced ArchiCanvas, a membrane ceiling with a high design quality inkjet printing process, to a new government building in Ogimi Village, Okinawa Prefecture. The new government building will be completed in May 2023. The new government building opened on Monday, May 8, 2023.
Ogimi Village in Okinawa Prefecture, famous as the “Home of Bashofu,” has been producing Bashofu in home gardens for about 130 years, and in 1974, the Bashofu of Kinyojia, Ogimi Village was designated as an important intangible cultural asset by the Japanese government. This time, we created a membrane ceiling with a design of a beautiful little bird (tuigwah) on this basho cloth and installed it on the ceiling of the Ogimi Village Assembly Hall on the third floor of the new government building. In addition, white membrane ceilings with no printing were installed on the first and second floor ceilings of the government building.
Membrane ceilings draw attention due to successive ceiling falls
With a series of accidents involving falling ceilings being reported, attention is being focused on improving the earthquake resistance of non-structural members such as ceiling materials. With a mass of approximately 600g/m2, the membrane material is extremely lightweight compared to conventional ceiling materials. The flexible membrane material not only enhances the interior design, but also reduces the risk of ceiling fallout by enabling it to follow the deformation caused by large shaking in the event of an earthquake. Although the material is only 1 mm thick, it is strong enough to catch falling objects. These advantages have been highly evaluated, and membrane ceilings are being actively used in renewal and new construction of school facilities, gymnasiums, indoor swimming pools, and other facilities. The new government building in Ogimi Village, Okinawa Prefecture, is designed with a large area per floor. By adopting a membrane ceiling, a government building with an inexpensive, safe, and well-designed ceiling was created.
Developed a membrane ceiling that can be freely designed.
As the introduction of membrane ceilings continues to grow, there is an increasing need for membrane ceilings with a higher level of design than ever before. Taiyo Kogyo has received noncombustible certification for two types of printed membrane materials: the inkjet printing method, which offers a high degree of freedom in design, and the gravure printing method, which offers a standard wood grain tone and low unit cost, and has been promoting their introduction as “ArchiCanvas” since 2019. Following the Tottori City Hall Council Chambers in Tottori Prefecture (completed in 2019), the gravure printing method “ArchiCanvas” was adopted as the ceiling material for the new Ogimi Village Hall in Okinawa Prefecture as the second example of inkjet printing at the site.
