Taiyo Kogyo Corporation
(Tokyo Head Office: Setagaya-ku, Tokyo; Osaka Head Office: Yodogawa-ku, Osaka; President: Hidefumi Araki), a company involved in large membrane structures (tent structures) and civil engineering and logistics materials, has been providing Gundel Sheet (impervious sheet) and other products to a land-based aquaculture demonstration project to verify their effectiveness.
According to a survey by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan, the amount of farmland in disrepair in Japan in 2020 will amount to 282,000 hectares. As the need to utilize such unused farmland grows, there is a growing interest in obtaining permission to convert farmland into land for aquaculture. MHI is providing technology such as impervious sheets that can be used in this onshore aquaculture, and is supporting businesses that are involved in this type of project. Through this support for demonstration projects, we will verify the best way to provide our technologies, including impervious sheets, for onshore aquaculture.
summary
(President: Yusheng Hirano and Aya Hirano), which is engaged in the cultivation of banamei shrimp in an agricultural greenhouse in the town of Kyonan, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, A 5m wide and 32m long section of the facility was used as an aquaculture tank. The company was involved in the design, processing, and installation of the aquaculture tanks and heat insulation sheets by applying the technologies of “Maxwall,” a continuous box-shaped steel frame, “Gundel Sheet,” a water barrier sheet, and protective mats, which are commonly used as civil engineering materials.
The use of gundel sheets as aquaculture tanks allows farmland to be utilized without contaminating farm soil, and can be converted to aquaculture tanks at a lower cost than concrete tanks or secondary products. In addition, the use of soil temperatures increases heat retention and is effective in controlling water temperature. Taiyo Kogyo intends to actively support land-based aquaculture in Japan by promoting support for demonstration experiments in other regions and for marine products.
Land-based Aquaculture Overview
Location: Kyonan Town, Chiba Prefecture
Operated by: Seaside Consulting Inc.
Size of aquaculture site: 11m wide x 45m long, approx. 500㎡.
Size of aquaculture tank: 5m wide x 32m long x 1.5m high, approx. 200m3
Achievements of the technology adopted in this project
Taiyo Kogyo has developed a number of environmentally friendly civil engineering material products in a wide range of fields in the civil engineering infrastructure business. The products applied to aquaculture tanks have been used in many temporary and permanent construction projects as products that have demonstrated excellent workability and reliability at sites where high reliability is required.
Maxwall, used as an enclosure for aquaculture tanks, is a box-shaped steel frame that allows for easy installation of a continuous earthen embankment. It is used throughout Japan as a temporary material for long-term temporary construction and main construction, as an emergency measure in the event of a disaster, and as a stockpile material for disaster prevention. Gundel Sheet” is a global standard impervious sheet that has been used in 50 countries around the world for various applications including final waste disposal sites, reservoirs, and detention ponds to ensure a high level of watertightness. By combining a protective mat, we have succeeded in preventing damage and leakage of the impervious sheet and enhancing its thermal insulation properties.
About Taiyo Kogyo
Taiyo Kogyo is a “leading company of membrane structures” that aims to maximize social value. Taking advantage of the characteristics of light and strong materials, Taiyo Kogyo is expanding its products into various construction businesses symbolized by the roofs of giant domes, as well as civil engineering, logistics, and even the environmental field. In recent years, in particular, the company has been attracting public attention for its emergency response to the many disasters that have occurred in various regions, medical tents for use against the new type of corona, and protective suits for use in hospital visits.
