(Tokyo headquarters: Setagaya-ku, Tokyo; Osaka headquarters: Yodogawa-ku, Osaka; President: Hidefumi Araki), a manufacturer of large membrane surface structures (tent structures), has been awarded the 2017 Good Design Award (sponsored by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion) for the New Toyosu Brillia Running Stadium, a project in which it participated as the architect. Japan Institute of Design Promotion).
The Shin Toyosu Brillia Running Stadium opened on December 10, 2016, with the aim of providing a community space where everyone can enjoy sports and art.
The ETFE Film, a high-performance fluoropolymer membrane material that is attracting increasing attention as a new material, was used on a large scale for the first time in Japan, and the arch shape was constructed using unitized Japanese larch laminated timbers to realize a building system that will promote the use of wooden construction for temporary and simple buildings.
Taiyo Kogyo participated in the project as the architect of the facility and was one of the first to introduce ETFE Film, which provides athletes with a safe and open space through its glass-like transparency and the lightness and flexibility inherent in the film. The Good Design Award is proof that the facility’s structural appeal was highly evaluated.
The Good Design Award for the Shin Toyosu Brillia Running Stadium was jointly won by four companies: Tokyo Tatemono, Tokyo Gas Site Development Co.
Taiyo Kogyo hopes to use this award as momentum to further promote the use of ETFE Film in Japan and deliver comfortable spaces that combine openness and safety to society.
Judges' Evaluation Comments
The “structure” is the simplest use of a straight running course, but it impresses at a glance and evokes a sense of excitement at the same time. When the function of structure is combined with the function of impression, a place of value emerges in a multilayered manner. It is no mean feat for the author, who is not interested in running in the slightest, to be made to “want to run” by the power of the structure. The architecture of the roof invites people to take action.
