Completed the second example of a “next-generation chimney” made of membrane material in Japan.

Taiyo Kogyo Corporation (Tokyo Head Office: Setagaya-ku, Tokyo; Osaka Head Office: Yodogawa-ku, Osaka; President: Yumi Nomura), a company involved in large-scale membrane structures (tent structures) and civil engineering and logistics materials, has received an order from Hitachi Zosen Corporation (Head Office: Suminoe-ku, Osaka; President: Michi Kuwahara) for the construction of a “next-generation chimney” for the Eastern Saga Prefecture Environmental Facility Association, Eastern Saga Clean Ecoland. (Head Office: Suminoe-ku, Osaka; President: Michi Kuwahara), and recently completed construction.

「次世代煙突」は、従来のごみ焼却施設の煙突に用いられてきた外壁コンクリートやPCパネルに替わり、軽量素材である「PTFEガラス繊維膜材」を採用した新工法です。

2011年に太陽工業と日立造船の共同で開発がスタートし、国土交通大臣指定性能評価機関である一般社団法人日本膜構造協会（東京都中央区、川口健一代表理事）の技術審査を経て、2013年より販売を開始しました。2018年4月に稼働開始した、城南衛生管理組合クリーンパーク折居（所在地：京都府宇治市）に続き、本件が2件目の採用事例となります。

By covering a large area with a single membrane panel, installation time is reduced compared to conventional installation methods.

The membrane material is highly translucent, allowing natural light to penetrate the space inside the chimney, which improves workability during maintenance in the interior space. The outer surface of the membrane does not require external painting, thus reducing maintenance costs.

The surface of the membrane material is coated with titanium oxide photocatalyst, which also decomposes and removes nitrogen compounds (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx) contained in the air. It also maintains a beautiful white appearance due to its self-cleaning effect, which breaks down organic dirt and washes it away with rain.

Membrane materials are extremely lightweight compared to conventional building materials and are characterized by high earthquake resistance. Because it is a flexible material, it follows deformation during earthquakes and is not easily damaged or scattered. This material is less likely to cause secondary disasters due to falling.

The “Next Generation Chimney” received the Good Design Award in 2018 for its seismic resistance, ease of construction and maintenance. The newly completed project features a polyhedron that transforms from a square to an octagonal shape toward the top, and the chimney made of white membrane material is also characterized by its high monument-like design.
