New Hiroshima Soccer Stadium with roof over the bleachers

(Tokyo Head Office: Setagaya-ku, Tokyo; Osaka Head Office: Yodogawa-ku, Osaka; President: Yumi Nomura; hereafter “Taiyo Kogyo”), a company involved in large-scale membrane structures (tent structures) and civil engineering and logistics materials, has applied a lightweight, high-transparency, high-performance fluoropolymer ETFE film to the recently completed new Hiroshima City Soccer Stadium (EDION Peace Wing Hiroshima). The new stadium is a lightweight, highly transparent, high-performance fluoropolymer ETFE film. This material, which provides both rain protection for spectator seating and natural light on the pitch, which is essential for turf maintenance, has also been used overseas at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the U.S. (installed by our U.S. subsidiary Birdair, Inc. This is the first time that the system has been used for a large-scale stadium in Japan.

About High Performance Fluoropolymer ETFE Film

ETFEフィルムはフッ素樹脂をフィルム状に圧延したもので、ガラスに代わる新しい建築表現が可能な材料として注目されており、国内では、有明地区へ移設している新豊洲Brilliaランニングスタジアムの屋根やユニクロ心斎橋のファサードに使用されています。
今回使用したETFEフィルム膜材は、わずか500μm(マイクロメートル)の薄さで、重量874g/㎡と超軽量です。ガラスと比較すると製造工程でCO2排出を大きく低減できるほか、輸送による環境負荷も減らすことができる素材です。膜構造の特徴である変形追随性に優れているため、建築躯体への負荷を軽減し耐震性に優れています。

Main features of ETFE film

(i) Durability
Despite its thickness of 0.5 mm, the durability is about 25 years. Since it has fire retardant performance, it can be used for some applications in Article 22 areas of the Building Standard Law, which are areas where the roofs of buildings must be made of noncombustible materials or thatched.
(ii) Transparency
Maintains a high light transmittance (transparent, 500 μm) visible light transmittance of 86.8% in all areas of ultraviolet, visible light, and infrared rays. Light transmitted can be controlled by using different film types (transparent, pearlescent, white, blue, dot print, etc.).
3) Earthquake resistance
ETFE film (500 μm) weighs approximately 874 g/m2, which is lighter than other common building materials. As with conventional membrane structures, this film can reduce the load on the building frame and improve earthquake resistance. In addition, because of its superior deformation-following property, it does not break and shatter like glass, keeping the interior space safe.

In this project, the steel framework is minimized as much as possible, and a new tension-type ETFE membrane roof with a single-layer ETFE reinforced with cables is realized, creating the only solution to the contradictory problems of rain protection and natural light acquisition on the pitch. We believe that this new option will break the stereotype that natural turf growth requires a compromised roof and that stadium membrane roofs are white. We will continue to strive to find new possibilities for membrane structures.
